** Meanwhile, opposition to the military junta is growing.** On Wednesday, former rebel leader and Nigerien political figure Rissa Ag Boula launched a movement against the regime, marking the first organized resistance to military rule in the West African nation.
Boula's group, "The National Council for the Resistance," aims to restore President Bazoum to power. He previously led the country during two Tuareg rebellions in the 1990s and from 2007 to 2009.
** Despite closing its borders, the junta allowed two emissaries sent by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu - renowned traditional leaders Ramido Mohammed Sanosi and Abdou Salam Abubakar - to enter the country.** Sanosi met with General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the leader of the coup, while Abubakar met with other representatives at the airport.
Sanosi said upon returning to Abuja that they "will continue our best efforts to bring both sides together for understanding. Now is the time for public diplomacy."
This situation highlights the ongoing tensions and uncertainties surrounding Niger's political future. The international community continues to call for a peaceful resolution, but the threat of violence looms large.
